Hong Kong Street Food

In Hong Kong, you certainly won't go hungry for long. At almost every street corner, you can find something interesting to eat. And most of the time, the street food is actually quite delicious.

In Mongkok, we tried the smelly tofu, which was not really that smelly. I still prefer the ones in Taipei which gives you a kick just by smelling them. Here in Hong Kong, the ones we tried were very mild, but still quite tasty. The BBQ squids looked better but we could not eat so much. Such a waste.

Then there is the popular egg waffle (雞蛋仔). You can find this in many places. We tried the one in Kowloon City. It was not too bad, but not crispy enough. I have eaten better ones in Causeway Bay.

I have been to Hong Kong many times, but this was the first time that I noticed roasted gingko nuts. Roasted chestnuts I have seen plenty, but Roasted Gingko Nuts (生炒雞心白果) is the first time. So we had to try it and so glad that we did. It was quite an experience. The nut cracked easily by biting, and the seed inside was fragrant and slightly chewy with a bittersweet taste. If you don't like the bitter taste, peel the seed open and remove the developed embryo, then you will only taste the sweetness. This lady's stall is along Waterloo Road (窩打老道) under the overhead railway bridge.

Another delicacy we had to try was the 砵仔糕 (Hong Kong Bowl Cake). We found one stall along Dundas Street (登打士街) which had the original flavour and coconut flavour bowl cakes. We tried both, the ones with red beans included. They were exactly what we expected. Not too sweet, slightly more solid than a pudding, and very fragrant.

We also tried the 白糖糕 (Sugar Cake).

Another popular favourite among Hong Kongers is the Curry Fishballs (咖喱魚蛋) and Mixed Beef Innards (牛什). I must tell you, they truly are delicious. We had some in Sham Shui Po, and we liked it plenty. Not too spicy by Singapore standards, steaming hot in the cold weather, tender and flavourful and you should add some mustard. Absolutely mouth-watering.
